What We Do

We collaborate with oil-and-gas industry researchers to develop technologies that improve efficiency in E&P activities. We are the custodian of forward-thinking petrophysical concepts that we contribute in research partnerships. For example, individual rock property measurements or their “coupled” forms – ratios and products – are not adequate for quantitative interpretation of the subsurface or determination of reservoir properties. But when they are defined in appropriate relationships or integrated with other rock property measurements, they become useful for quantifying and segregating reservoir characteristics.

Fossil fuels are not going away any time soon and will remain a major contributor to the world’s energy portfolio for decades to come. The need will exist to find more oil and gas deposits, but accomplishing this will not be easy. Unconventional reservoirs as well as complex conventional resources will continue to challenge researchers. There is a lot of geologic and reservoir information we are still striving to extract from seismic data, despite multi-disciplinary integration and genuine efforts by practitioners of rock physics and subsurface imaging.

The trajectory of research in. unconventional resources points to: 1) improved characterization of shale reservoirs to predict and locate “sweet spots;” 2) improved reservoir performance; and 3) development of improved technologies and engineering practices to ensure these resources are developed safely and with minimal environmental impact. For the potential benefits of unconventional resources to be guaranteed, collaboration between researchers, producers, service providers, policy makers, local leaders, industry associations, investors and academia, combined with the right advances in technology, will be crucial. Effecting this collaboration is a research challenge by itself.

Resourceful provision and application of various sources and forms of energy drive modern civilization. The process is complicated. Currently, energy concerns are focused in the areas of resources, responsibility to the environment, energy security and national security. Meeting these concerns entails a long-term process with uncertain outcomes; hence the need for public and private support of energy research, in conjunction with technical and financial investment in renewable and sustainable sources.

Development of conventional and unconventional petroleum resources, as well as provision and application of energy, demand that these are done with minimal environmental impact. Technical environmental priorities include new technologies to address water quality and availability, onshore and offshore safety, improvements to mitigation equipment and infrastructure, and minimizing carbon dioxide emissions. Educating and informing the public through workshops and seminars are essential complements toward addressing the technical challenges.

We are in the leading edge of working with research institutions and researchers to create research structure that would ensure access to funding, proper post-award research management, and connection to full range of expertise needed to get research achievements to the point of useful impact.

We assist governments and funding agencies to enhance the return on their research investments through creating proper research framework, as well as monitoring and auditing of funded research projects.

Government is both a funder of research and consumer of research output. As such, government needs research structure as well as the capacity to provide an enabling research environment. The enabling research environment might entail adequate funding of research universities and government-owned research institutes, encouraging postgraduate studies, and developing mechanisms for systematic collaborative research. Similar efforts could connect networks and efficiencies that guarantee research achievements reach where they provide solutions to various developmental challenges.
